For my first Double Latte Project of 2025, I decided to focus on a topic close to my heart, women in politics. While last November's election results were hard for many folks including the 92% one shining star of that election cycle was the election of two Black women to the U.S. Senate marking the first time that two Black women were elected in the same cycle. Senators Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks are the fourth and fifth Black women in history elected to the Senate.
Originally, when I highlighted an organization, I gave a one time donation of $10 i.e., the cost of two lattes. But since the price of a latte has gone up, like everything else minus worker salaries, my donations will now be $12. However, there is something unique about these two contributions as I decided to become a recurring political donor to each sister senator. As a political fundraiser, I know that these donations won’t yield call time calls or invites to any donor receptions but adding to the number of recurring donors these senators have does help.
How does my and your donation help two politicians who were just elected to a position with a six year term? Because as these women are figuring out what type of senators their wish to be and key way to help them have the flexibility to be whatever kind of senator that is is to raise a lot of money/have a lot of cash on hand or money in the bank for their campaign committees. Having large amounts of money gives them power with in the Democratic party and as an extension yields power within the senate chamber.
Now to my favorite part (read with sarcasm) of political fundraising, the ask.
